What is Rent to Own?

Rent-to-own, also known as lease-to-own or lease-option, is a hybrid real estate arrangement that combines elements of renting and buying. In this agreement, a tenant rents a property for a specified period with the exclusive option (and sometimes obligation) to purchase the property at the end of the lease term.

During the rental period, a portion of the monthly rent—called the "rent credit"—is set aside and applied toward the future purchase price. Additionally, the tenant typically pays an upfront "option fee" which secures their right to buy the property and is also credited toward the purchase.
